In addition to circumcision, Rabbi Feldstein offers newborn frenectomy services, also known as tongue-tie release. Tongue-tie, or ankyloglossia, is a condition that affects approximately 5-10% of newborns (and more common in boys), in which the tissue that connects the tongue to the bottom of the mouth is either too short or too thick and runs too long towards the teeth, preventing the child from being able to fully lift his tongue. This restriction of the tongue often creates difficulty with the ability to suck, and thus commonly causes pain for breastfeeding mothers. If left untreated, a tongue tie can also affect speech, breathing, digestion, and dental decay or spacing (diastema) when the child grows older.
Very often, a tongue-tie will be noticed when breastfeeding is a painful experience for a mother, or when a baby is receiving insufficient nutrients and not gaining weight properly. In these cases a lactation consultant or pediatrician will often suggest having it assessed. This involves inspecting under the tongue to see how it is attached to the bottom of the mouth, and to determine whether that affects the baby’s sucking ability.
Rabbi Feldstein provides full assessment and treatment services with a rapid healing time, and has been thanked many times for pointing out tongue-ties and identifying them as the cause for difficult feeding. His procedures regularly bring immediate improvement in breastfeeding for both Mommy and Baby.
In a procedure that takes just a few seconds, Rabbi Feldstein cleanly resolves tongue-ties in newborns. This has proven to help feeding and speech in many children, and has brought great relief to breastfeeding mothers. Aftercare is easy and painless: simply massage under Baby’s tongue for a few seconds after each feeding for approximately three days until healing is complete. This ensures that the tissue will not grow back and your child will never have his/her tongue restricted again!
